In an ever-changing world, women stand out for their ability to transform challenges into opportunities. Confronted for centuries with social, religious and cultural obstacles, they have developed resilience and innovation strategies to advance their cause and that of society as a whole.
One of the main challenges they face is inequality of opportunity, whether in the professional, entrepreneurial or academic spheres. To address this, many women are taking a proactive approach by investing in education, developing support networks and creating businesses that meet the specific needs of their communities. According to a study carried out by OXFAM-France in 2021, worldwide, men hold 50% more wealth than women, and 61% of the poorest people are women.
In the field of entrepreneurship, more and more women are setting up innovative, sustainable businesses. Thanks to their perseverance and creativity, they are succeeding in overcoming financial obstacles and proposing solutions adapted to contemporary challenges, particularly in terms of sustainable development and social inclusion. We can cite the example of the 8th edition of UNCTAD’s Women in Business Awards, which rewarded women entrepreneurs from developing countries who have brought about positive change for people and the planet. We can mention the case of our brave women in the markets of Dantokpa in Cotonou and Asiganmè in Lomé.
Another emblematic example is Oprah Winfrey. Founder of Harpo Productions, the Oprah Winfrey Network and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, she is a fervent defender of women’s rights. From a modest background, she has become a leading figure in the media industry, and the first black American woman to own her own production company. Today, her fortune is estimated at US$2.9 billion, illustrating the power of determination and innovation.
Notable progress is being made in women’s leadership, which is increasingly asserting itself in a variety of sectors. In politics, business and even traditionally masculine fields such as technology and engineering, women are taking on responsibilities and inspiring future generations. They are redefining standards and demonstrating that diversity is a major asset for performance and innovation.
One outstanding example is Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first woman elected by universal suffrage to head an African country, Liberia. Despite many personal and political challenges, she persevered and restored peace and stability after a 14-year civil war that claimed thousands of lives, earning her the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011.
Finally, women play a crucial role in social transformation. Through their involvement in movements for gender equality, the defense of human rights and access to education, they contribute to building a more equitable and inclusive world. We can cite the National Organization for Women (NOW), the Fédération des femmes du Québec. WILDAF (Women in Law and Development in Africa); AFARD (Association des Femmes Africaines pour la Recherche et le Développement Their actions have a lasting impact and show that every challenge can be an opportunity for change and progress.
Rosa Parks is a perfect example. A civil rights activist, she became an emblematic figure in the struggle for equality in the United States when she refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus in 1955. Her commitment sparked a movement that profoundly transformed American society, earning her the title of “Mother of the Freedom Movement”.
In conclusion, thanks to their resilience, creativity and commitment, women transform challenges into opportunities. Their ability to innovate, adapt and inspire improves not only their own condition, but that of society as a whole. Every obstacle thus becomes an opportunity for growth and positive transformation. However, many challenges remain to be met, including equitable access to management positions, the fight against gender-based violence and the recognition of women in the technological and scientific sectors. These current issues require a collective commitment to ensure a more inclusive and egalitarian future.
